The Jonas Lie MEGAPACK ® 14 Classic Novels and Stories edition by Jonas Lie Literature Fiction eBooks
Wikipedia says Lie is one of Norway's four greatest nineteenth century writers, along with Henrik Ibsen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Alexander Kielland. Ibsen is the only one that I know well. Amazon's notes for this book claim that it contains "14 classic Novels and Stories" but their list doesn't make clear which titles are stories and which are novels. For the record the novels are "THE PILOT AND HIS WIFE", "THE VISIONARY" & "ONE OF LIFE'S SLAVES". The short stories all seem to be from "Weird Tales from the Northern Seas". His reputation is as a realist, but the stories revolve around superstitions so inevitably some magic slips into the realism. Note that Lie's most famous book, "The Family at Gilje", isn't here. So $1 won't buy everything in the world. But there is a Kindle version of this book too, which currently goes for $3.29. You could pick it up and still be under a fiver. Should you get these two books? If you can handle 19th Century realism, sure. And maybe Norway in the late Nineteenth Century can be considered "quaint". There's a lot more where these books came from. Lie was fairly productive over 50 years starting in 1966. The books have been in print for more than a century. Of course there is no guarantee that they will all be available today in translation.Product details
