At the foxhole level, war imprints an indelible mark that is invisible to historians who focus on commanders at headquarters directing the sweeping movements of troops. A real, raw and fresh perspective is enclosed in this personal journal of what it's like to go through a war. Preserved in writing are the experiences and insights of those in all branches of the service who participated, especially those motivated, dedicated volunteers in the Airborne infantry who endured the hardships of the Sand Box, carried with them a cherished reminder of home and leaned on each other to perform their duty with what Hemingway called grace under pressure. Inclusion in such fellowship must be earned, not bestowed, even for those whose mission was to write it down.

This has been an eye-opening, on-the ground lesson of what it’s like to be in the gritty, unpredictable realm of Desert Storm. My copy of Bedouin Bob’s personal saga has become a textbook highlighted in yellow marker teaching how it was for a soldier, and a journalist, to live moment-by-moment in a hostile desert with his band of brothers, scorpions and the unseen enemy. I never realized how amazing the military choreography is involving all the Tactical Forces of combat-ready companies, battalions, etc. Or how terrifying having to dig what could have been his grave in the sand, possibly facing death by nerve-gas. Rather than maximizing the event, he addresses the soldiers of the 82nd Airborne in a caring, personal way giving them respect and praise. He knows what their possible sacrifices could have been yet chose to live with them side-by-side in foxholes ready to absorb the impact the soldier faces in the time of war. Those men and women of the 82nd are still very special to him.
Over several chapters, the author addresses his brother Eddie’s harrowing service in Vietnam. I admit to crying over much of what Eddie and his fellow soldiers experienced in that inane background. The war picture of that era was shredded by those who saw the damning of that ridiculous war is by shaming those who had to fight it. Dvorchak told it as an honorable tribute to the soldiers and victims of that conflict while driving home the praise of and for 21st century Americans who honor soldiers now as they should have always been.
While reading this awesome narrative, I tried to imagine having the constant sand in my teeth, eating MREs out in the scorching sand yet freezing when the sun goes down...and learning to Drive On as the war is described as “yesterday’s news.” Reading “Drive On” was more surreal for me as I read about the moments and hours of Bedouin Bob without having to wonder how things turned out for the author. All I have to do is look over my shoulder at my next door neighor, to see that Bedouin Bob Dvorchak is alive, well and at home.

Drive on The Uncensored War of Bedouin Bob and the AllAmericans Robert J Dvorchak LLC Tactical 16 9781943226214 Books Reviews
very very good
It told the war from the troops perspective. The author put his life on the line traveling with combat forces instead of reporting from a five star hotel in the rear as most reporters do.
Very realistic and true to real life lived by the folks who served in this conflict. Excellent job of journalism.
Good read for everyone.
A great read from a different perspective that of a journalist. Well written & some great history included. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book from a non-combatant's perspective & experiences as I was not sure what to expect. Really enjoyed this book & highly recommend it.
"Drive On" is an excellent account of the life of the warriors of the 82nd Airborne Division as they prepared for their part in Desert Storm. (The Gulf War).
The Author was imbedded with them as they trained and prepared for whatever awaited them when the action starts. Also, reading about the in depth day to day life of a War Correspondent was tremendously interesting and informative. Basically a civilian, the author was dumped into the rigors of life in the desert wastelands, he had to quickly adapt and function as well as the highly trained soldier. Refusing to be circulated back to the states for even a short break, Mr. Dvorchak hung in with troops and ended up being accepted and respected as one of the grunts. No easy feat for a civilian among a group as close as the 82nd Airborne Band of Brothers. I highly recommend this book to anyone with the slightest interest in what our great servicemen and women do for the love of their country. Also, the War Correspondents who bravely cover the action of the front lines.
There's nothing better than being a fly on the wall. And in his new book Bob Dvorchak (aka Bedouin Bob) takes you there. He draws a vivid picture of his days dug in with the 82nd Airborne, awaiting "go" time for Operation Desert Storm. The story that unfolds isn't just a snapshot of a very particular moment in our nation's military history. It also offers intimate portraits of the soldiers Dvorchak chronicled as an Associated Press correspondent embedded alongside them. Drive On captures the cold, the tedium, the apprehension and homesickness so familiar to generations of war veterans. It's clearly an experience that touched the author personally on many levels, and resonates in his life to this day.
